Our goal is to help you give your cat the best possible life, whether you’re raising a playful kitten or nurturing a mature companion.
Diet & Nutrition
A balanced, high-quality diet is key to the long-term health and development of Maine Coons and Ragdolls. Both breeds are slow to mature and benefit from a diet rich in protein to support steady growth and muscle tone.
Feeding recommendations:
- Choose a premium grain-free food with real meat as the first ingredient.
- For kittens, use a kitten-specific formula until around 12–14 months, depending on growth rate.
- Offer a mix of wet and dry food to maintain hydration and oral health.
- Always provide fresh water — Maine Coons in particular love running water, so a cat fountain can encourage drinking.
Avoid:
- Low-quality supermarket foods or fillers like corn and wheat.
- Frequent treats — they should make up no more than 10% of daily intake.
Feeding schedules should be consistent, with portion control to maintain a healthy weight. As both breeds have hearty appetites, monitoring growth and body condition is essential.
Grooming
Both Maine Coons and Ragdolls have luxurious semi-long coats that require regular grooming to stay healthy and free from tangles. Though their fur is naturally silky and resistant to matting, a consistent routine helps maintain its shine and reduces shedding.
Recommended routine:
- Brush 2–3 times per week using a slicker brush or wide-tooth comb to remove loose fur and prevent knots.
- During seasonal moults, daily grooming may be needed to manage shedding.
- Gently check and clean around the ears, eyes, and underarms, where tangles tend to form.
- Trim nails every few weeks, and regularly check paw pads — especially for polydactyl Maine Coons with extra toes.
- Bathing isn’t required often, but an occasional gentle wash can help remove dander and maintain coat condition.
Making grooming part of your cat’s bonding time helps them associate it with comfort and attention. Both breeds generally enjoy the routine when introduced early and handled calmly.
